When and how are portfolio deletions announced?
[ top ]
Portfolio deletion alerts are announced on a weekly basis. Deletions are normally
disclosed after the close of trading on the last day of
every week through the website, email
release and telephone hotline. The
monthly printed newsletter also recaps any deletions
during the prior month.
After the close of trading on the last trading day of
the week (typically Friday evening), the Weekly Update segment of the SSR website is revised to
disclose any deletion alerts that have been issued for the
week. The Weekly Update page also
summarizes the portfolio performance for the week,
lists any portfolio alerts from the prior four weeks,
and provides information on each of the current stocks
making up the SSR portfolio.
The Stock Superstars Report also maintains a
telephone hotline for subscribers to call and find out if
any portfolio deletion alerts have been issued for the
week. The number for the telephone hotline can be
found in the printed monthly newsletter.
Why are portfolio deletion alerts issued only once a week?
[ top ]
Many subscribers have asked why we do not issue
deletion alerts intra-week instead of waiting until the end of
the trading week. By issuing our deletion alerts
after the close of trading for the week, we
allow all subscribers at least two days to decide
whether there is any action they will need to take. If
we were to issue our alerts during the course of the
trading week, it would place some subscribers at an
advantage over others. Also, we have tried to make
the SSR system as easy to follow as possible.
Knowing that there will only be one alert a week
eliminates the need to wonder whether alerts will be
issued during the course of the trading week.
When are portfolio additions announced? [ top ]
Portfolio addition alerts are issued on a monthly
basis. Like deletion alerts, addition alerts are
announced through the SSR website on the Monthly Buys page,
weekly email alert, telephone hotline, and
monthly newsletter. Portfolio addition alerts are issued
on a Friday (or the last trading day of the week) near
How quickly should I act after receiving a portfolio alert? [ top ]
You need not rush to purchase
stocks immediately after the portfolio alert. You
should be cautious about trading early, particularly at
the open, the first day after a portfolio alert. If you are a buyer, give the sellers
time to get involved in the market. Depending on
market action, you may wish to try to buy on weak
days. Also, it is always safer to employ limit orders.
The stocks we recommend are reasonably liquid
and our portfolio alert alone should not affect the
price significantly for any extended period of time. If
you are buying a large number of shares, you might
buy some one day and some another. While we
generally suggest taking action within the
week, you can wait longer if you feel the stock is
moving in your favor.
Is the SSR performance you report based upon
“real money” or hypothetical results? [ top ]
An actual portfolio was started at the beginning of
2002 that follows the SSR strategy from the
perspective of a subscriber. The results we report are
based upon the performance of this tracking portfolio
that consists of all 36 SSR stocks. Actual brokerage
commissions and fees are incurred and figured into
performance calculations. The return we present is a
time-weighted rate of return that is used for measuring
the performance of money managers and mutual
funds. All costs and expenses are considered in the
calculation. We comply with the performance
presentation standards of the CFA Institute, which
requires the use of a time-weighted rate of return. The
purpose of the time-weighted rate of return is to
measure the performance of the investment advice,
not the impact of money flowing into and out of the
